RMPL Programs & Events October - December 2013 - page 2

Welcome to the Rancho Mirage Public Library…
With autumn comes our annual welcome to another great Library programming season.
Please consider this booklet to be your invitation to a wide range of events that will inform,
entertain, and often surprise you.
The Library Community Room will be the location for most of the events described within
this publication. Although we promise you that all of our programs are noteworthy, I want to
mention several that stand out:
In October, we will feature the films and life of Boris Karloff, whose daughter Sara has been
most generous with her memories, her time, and her incredible memorabilia honoring her
father’s long and significant career on stage and screen. Be sure to attend these events on
October 28, 29, and 30.
The Library’s commitment to film continues with Christopher Perry returning to the Library
on October 23 to screen the silent comedy classic
The Kid Brother,
starring Harold Lloyd.
You will not only see this movie, you will hear live sound effects and music as if you were at
its presentation at the neighborhood Bijou in 1927.
The Bartush Family Foundation has funded jazz performances this season, beginning with
a performance by jazz singer Judy Wexler on November 7.
Another generous gift from Nancy and Tom Cunningham funds a new series of art history
lectures by Robert Brasier -
Puzzles About Art.
The cover of this program guide respects the somber 50
th
anniversary of the assassination of
President John Fitzgerald Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Acknowledging that event and
its implications, Robert Kline, film producer, college professor, and presidential historian will
offer a two-part lecture series, “Profiles in Courage” and “JFK Remembered” on November
18 and 19 at 2 P.M.
You will find a full calendar in the following pages. We hope you will join us and enjoy all the
possibilities of the arts in our Community Room, where we never stop “celebrating ideas!”

Library Director
